Darren and Jono met when they were at school. They were both into the same
types of rock music so an instant bond developed. Darren became a
steadfast Python follower, and was soon a willing stage helper at their
shows.
Darren then had a brief shot at lead vocals in the band Krazee – a band
created from the wreckage of Python. However, Creamsoda formed soon after
– Darren’s first introduction to Simon. He again took the reins as stage
tech, but also co-write some ‘soda lyrics with Jono.
The J & D’s blues tapes were wholly Darren’s idea, borne from the desire
to put onto tape some of the many songs he had written himself. This was
done in Joolz’ attic and in Jono’s home mini studio. These tapes have
since, sadly, been lost.
Darren later took up the mantle of drum and stage technician with Big Bad,
which naturally flowed into Macca’s Marones project.
Afterwards, Darren formed his own band, tentatively titled “Tube of Groove
Paste” – to fulfil his long burning desire to front his own rock band.
Prior to, and following the bands split, he dedicated his life to the
research of rock – old or new. He’s read about, bought CDs of, listened
to, and seen play live as many rock bands – from the very ordinary to the
down right weird – as he could. Any rock band you could name, and he knows
it, from style, to line up, to producer. If it’s rock, he knows it, knows
it well and knows what sells.
This extensive background, (coupled with the fact that they have all been
firm friends since the ‘soda days) was the reason why Simon and Jono asked
him to co-produce the Flyz album. |
